On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

red band trailer

If you purchase a ticket at a Regal Cinemas theater anytime soon, you may see something new on your movie screen:  a red band trailer.

These - intended for ‘restricted audiences’ only - would contain scenes viewable at R, NC-17 or unrated films.  They would be mixed in with the normal green band previews that ‘have been approved for all audiences’ by the MPAA.

Although clips with more adult matter - such as crude and sexual content - are not new to the internet, theater chains have been wary of playing them fearing they’d be viewed by the wrong demographic.

A-TeamEarlier this year, was resurrected as a two-hour television movie.  Now another ‘80s program will soon be doing one better. Come 2009, NBC’s The A-Team will become a big screen movie.

The hugely popular series, which ran from 1983-87, revolved around four former Special Forces soldiers who were running from a “crime they didn’t commit”.  While evading capture, the four characters - Face, Hannibal, B.A. Baracus and Murdock - made a living for themselves by working as soldiers of fortune.

has set a June 12, 2009 release date for the show’s adaptation.  Although no actors have yet been cast for the film, John Singleton - who most recently directed 2005’s Four Brothers - will be helming the project.  Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (3:10 to Yuma) will be in charge of the script.

Drillbit Taylor

Here are some possible suggestions for your upcoming weekend:

Earlier this month, we told you about Robert Downey Jr.‘s potentially controversial role in Tropic Thunder.  In the comedy, the actor plays an actor who plays a black man.  (Get that?)

Now here’s your chance to see a clip of the film also starring and Jack Black.  I’m excited to say the movie looks like a riot.

Anthony MinghellaOscar-award winning director Anthony Minghella died early this morning at the age of 54.

The man who helmed and wrote 1996’s The English Patient passed away at London’s Charing Cross Hospital after suffering a hemorrhage.  Although he reportedly had an operation for a growth on his neck last week, today’s events came as a surprise.

Minghella received an nomination for his work on the screenplay for The Talented Mr. Ripley.  He also directed Nicole Kidman and Jude Law in 2003’s Cold Mountain.

Anthony’s recent project - The No.1 Ladies’ Detective’s Agency - is scheduled to air March 23 on the BBC.

Horton Hears a Who

Thankfully, ‘s embarrassing stint on American Idol wasn’t all in vain.

earned $45 million dollars over the past weekend, trouncing the competition.  Although the kid-friendly flick has had the biggest opening of 2008 so far, the film falls in the middle of the pack when it comes to Dr. Seuss adaptations.  How The Grinch Stole Christmas opened with $55 million back in 2000; A Cat in the Hat took in $38.3 just three years later.

Horton‘s premiere also made a nice statement for non-Pixar related films overall.  This animated movie found itself in fifth place behind other cartoon debuts.  (Disney’s Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., Cars and rank one through four.)

The only other new entries in this week’s Top Ten were the mixed-martial arts pic and the post-apocalyptic thriller .

Attack of the Killer TomatoesAlthough I have a hard time believing there are people out there born after the ‘70s, I understand there are many who’ve never even heard of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.  Fortunately for them, there will soon be a remake.

Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine - the creators behind the “Ask A Ninja” web shorts -  have taken on the challenge of retooling the cult classic.  Although the update’s budget will undoubtedly be larger than the original’s (the first film reportedly cost less than $100,000), it’s unclear how far the writers will deviate from the 1978 storyline.

The movie about murderous fruit spawned three sequels including Return of the Killer Tomatoes and Killer Tomatoes Strike Back.  (‘s career managed to survive an appearance in the former.)  No target date for the redo has been announced.

It’s been a while since a trailer for a supposed horror movie has actually piqued my interest….let alone scared me.  That is until now.

If The Strangers doesn’t end up being one of the creepiest movies in some time, the editing crew behind this teaser should win an award for Best Act of Deception.

The movie - starring and Scott Speedman - hit theaters May 30th.

Horton Hears a Who

Here are some possible suggestions for your upcoming weekend:

.  This is the movie that’s supposed to make us forget about Ang Lee’s 2003 mistake called Hulk

Unfortunately, I just found myself giggling after I saw the big, cheesy reveal.

Question is:  Could they have possibly made the green guy look better?  After seeing movies like , have we come to expect too much from our ‘monsters’?

The Incredible Hulk comes to life this summer on June 13.
